People who experience constipation may find that drinking sparkling water helps to relieve their symptoms. In one study of 40 elderly people who had suffered strokes, average bowel movement frequency nearly doubled in the group that drank carbonated water, compared to the group that drank tap water. What’s more, the participants reported a 58% decrease in symptoms.

Another scientific review out of the U.K. published in 2014 analyzed 20 different trials involving 902 subjects with a central neurological disease like Parkinson’s, or a brain injury, such as a stroke. People with these types of health issues are much more likely to experience constipation compared to the general population. This study made the interesting finding that sparkling water may be helpful to people with central neurological issues who suffer from constipation.

For other dietary tips, the website Eat This, Not That! interviewed two dietitians on their medical advisory board to get these ideas:

1) Eat a complete breakfast — If you’re trying to avoid sugar cravings throughout your day, breakfast is one of the most important places to start. Those who begin the day with a complete breakfast of high-fiber carbohydrates (like oats, 100% whole grain bread, and fruit) and high-quality protein (like lean meat, eggs, dairy foods) start the day with stable blood sugar. Typically people that eat more in the morning crave less at night and do a better job controlling their portion sizes.

2) Snack on a high-fiber carb and protein — When you feel that mid-morning or late-afternoon hunger, reaching for a filling snack instead of something high in sugar will actually be more effective. Fiber and protein in particular slow down digestion, helping you get full faster and stay full longer, so consider string cheese and fruit, yogurt and berries, beef jerky and a granola bar. (Adding some sparkling water to go along with it can help you feel fuller too.)

3) Don’t let yourself get too hungry — People often think that by skipping out on a snack or meal they’re being “healthier,” but this will almost always just lead to more intense cravings. That’s because when people get too hungry, they typically don’t look for something healthy to eat. Instead, they look for something sweet to raise their blood sugar back up to normal. A blood sugar drop is a real thing; it can make you feel fatigued, have a headache, and even experience dizziness, shakiness, and nauseousness. Eating more often and balancing that meal or snack with carbs and protein can prevent you from blood sugar drops and ultimately help you avoid those sugar cravings.

Golden Glow Water

 

Ingredients:

1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 teaspoon molasses
juice of 1 lemon
Syfo Original Seltzer for topping

 

 

 

Preparation:

In a glass jar, combine the water, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, honey, molasses, and lemon juice. Shake well to combine. Chill until ready to drink. Shake before serving. Add ice to 2 glasses, pour over the water and top with sparkling water. Drink. Garnish with citrus slices and fresh mint.

Holiday Pomegranate Mojito Mocktail

 

Ingredients:

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
4 lime wedges
Ice
4 ounces pomegranate juice
8 ounces of Syfo Original Seltzer
Pomegranate seeds
2 highball glasses

 

 

 

Preparation:

In a small sauce pan, heat the water and sugar over high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Set aside and let it cool. Place two lime wedges, five mint leaves and half of the simple syrup mixture in each glass. Muddle the ingredients together to infuse the flavors. Add in the ice and pomegranate seeds. Then, pour two ounces of pomegranate juice in each glass, followed by about four ounces of club soda. Stir well.
Garnish the tops of the drinks with extra mint and pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Chocolate Coconut Coffee Seltzer

 

Ingredients:

1 to 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup 
1/4 cup coconut milk
1/4 cup cold brew coffee
2 to 3 ounces chilled Syfo Original Seltzer
Ice
1 sliced orange

 

 

 

 

 

Preparation:

Combine the chocolate syrup and coconut milk in the bottom of a tall glass and stir until evenly combined. Add ice to the top of the glass, top with the coffee, and stir. Garnish with a slice of orange and top with club soda or seltzer water to your liking (we liked 2 to 3 ounces).
