Pharmaceuticals and Other Chemicals Pose Potential Threat to Healthy Drinking Water

Concern Grows Over Drugs and Chemicals in Drinking Water

New analytical techniques have now made it possible to accurately measure small amounts of chemicals in drinking water. These compounds, which include pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) along with endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), have long been known to have adverse effects on the environment. According to an article in Water Quality Products Magazine, now that these compounds can be measured in the water supply, concern is growing on the effect they may have on human health.

PPCPs can come from a variety sources, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, disinfectants, preservatives, sunscreens and deodorants. EDCs, which include pesticides, chlorinated chemicals, alkylphenols and plastic additives, target the human endocrine system by mimicking the body’s natural hormones.

Although pesticides are highly regulated, many of the other compounds that are finding their way into our water supply through wastewater and other avenues are not. Even though the measurable amounts of some these chemicals found in drinking water are small and the effect on human health still not clear, the best way to ensure that the water and beverages you drink are healthy is to drink water and beverages that are filtered through a reverse osmosis process. The entire Syfo Beverages product line, including Original Seltzer and Naturally-Flavored Sparkling Waters, are 100% purified using a sophisticated multi-step purification process that includes reverse osmosis.
