Concern Over Chemicals in Apple Juice

A study by the Empire State Consumer Project, a partner to the Food and Water Watch Organization, has shown an alarming high level of arsenic and heavy metals in apple juice, especially apple juice imported from China. The tests commissioned by the project revealed levels of arsenic contamination in one sample that was five times higher than what the Environmental Protection Agency allows in drinking water.

MyPlate Replaces the Food Pyramid

The food pyramid that we’ve known for years as a dietary guide has been replaced by MyPlate, which may be a more practical and easier-to-understand illustration of a good diet. Instead of the pyramid diagram, the types of foods needed to achieve a balanced diet will be represented on a plate as an example of a healthy meal.

Health Concerns Grow Over Fluoridated Water

Coming on the heels of the US government statement in January lowering the recommended levels of fluoride in drinking water, concern continues to grow over use of the substance in drinking water, toothpaste and other products.

Toothpaste manufacturers are introducing fluoride-free toothpaste for young children and the National Kidney Foundation has withdrawn its support for water fluoridation, noting the potential risks to susceptible members of the population.
