Recipe of the Day
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for kids in the United States. It’s also one of the highest, if not the highest, season for sugar consumption. The dietary upshot? According to the USDA, the average kid consumes about 3 cups of sugar and 1½ cups of fat on Halloween. That’s about 7,000 extra calories.
So during Halloween events and activities, why add to all that sugar intake with sugary soda? Try Syfo instead. Syfo Naturally Flavored Sparkling Waters come in four delicious flavors — Lemon-Lime, Wild Cherry, Tangerine-Orange and Peach-Pear. With no sugar, sodium, artificial sweetener or preservatives, they’re healthy for you and your kids, plus you can add your favorite fruit juice to create a special treat.
It’s the perfect way for you to give your kids a healthy and happy Halloween. This article in the Orange County Register has some other great tips for enjoying a guilt-free Halloween:
- Come up with a “sugar budget” for the holiday with your kids, agreeing on how many pieces of candy kids can eat during and after Halloween.
- When it’s time for trick or treat, send your child out the door with a belly full of fiber and protein. Whole food slows the absorption of sugar.
- For the Halloween parties, try substituting trays of sliced vegetables for extra cupcakes or cookies and of course serve sparkling water instead of soda.
- After Halloween, create a “buyback” program where kids can exchange all that extra candy that they can’t hope to eat for a toy or book.
- Incorporate Halloween candy into a larger discussion about healthy attitudes toward what your kids eat and drink.

Sparkling water is growing fast in popularity and not just because of the effervescence and refreshing taste. Many of our own customers have sung its praises for improving their health, including weight loss, battling diabetes and helping them through pregnancy. In this post, we’d like to focus on another great health benefit of sparkling water — helping with digestion.
Websites from draxe.com, livestrong.com to healthline.com have all outlined how sparkling water can help with digestion. Here are some of the highlights:
Sparkling water can help with constipation
People who experience constipation may find that drinking sparkling water helps to relieve their symptoms. In one study of 40 elderly people who had suffered strokes, average bowel movement frequency nearly doubled in the group that drank carbonated water, compared to the group that drank tap water. What’s more, the participants reported a 58% decrease in symptoms.
Another scientific review out of the U.K. published in 2014 analyzed 20 different trials involving 902 subjects with a central neurological disease like Parkinson’s, or a brain injury, such as a stroke. People with these types of health issues are much more likely to experience constipation compared to the general population. This study made the interesting finding that sparkling water may be helpful to people with central neurological issues who suffer from constipation.
Sparkling water can Increase feelings of fullness
Many Syfonatics have reported that Syfo Naturally Flavored Sparkling Waters have helped them lose weight, and it’s not just because of the lack of sugar or sweeteners. Sparkling water can help you feel fuller so you crave and consume less food.
The reason is that sparkling water may help food remain in the first part of the stomach for longer, which can trigger that sensation of fullness. In a controlled study of 19 healthy young women, fullness scores were higher after the participants drank 8 oz (250 ml) of sparkling water, compared to still water.
Sparkling water can improve overall digestion and help with dyspepsia
According to a 2002 study published in the “European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology”, if you’re feeling a little sick to your stomach after eating, drinking a glass of sparkling water might help. Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms that occur in the upper abdominal area and may include bloating, nausea, vomiting or quickly feeling full after eating.
Sparkling water can improve swallowing ability
It might seem surprising, but studies suggest that sparkling water may actually improve swallowing ability in both young and older adults. In one study, 16 healthy people were asked to repeatedly swallow different liquids. Carbonated water showed the strongest ability to stimulate the nerves responsible for swallowing function.
Sure the bubbles and flavor delight the tongue. But sparkling water can be an important factor in improving your health, including your digestive health. Read more testimonials here on how Syfo has helped people just like you to lead healthier lives.

If you find yourself craving something sweet throughout the day you’re not alone, millions of Americans are in the same boat. Part of the reason is all the added sugar in some of the food we buy, which causes us to want more of that “sugar high”. Scientists also believe that all this sugar consumption sends signals to the brain to “eat as much as you can”, which explain the common occurrence of craving sugar after consuming unhealthy foods.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, there at least two reasons that people crave sugar: you’re not eating enough or you’re eating a lot of processed foods with added sugar and salt. So the best way to break the sugar addiction is to change the way you eat and drink and what you consume.
When it comes to what you drink, Syfo can give you a head start. Instead of reaching for sugary soda or even diet drinks, grab some Syfo to quench your thirst and enjoy a refreshing treat. Our delicious Naturally Flavored Sparkling Waters are free of sugar, artificial sweeteners, sodium, preservatives or other additives and are refreshing and satisfying on their own. To gradually reduce your sugary drink habit, you can always mix one of our flavors or our Original Seltzer with your favorite soda or fruit juice.
For other dietary tips, the website Eat This, Not That! interviewed two dietitians on their medical advisory board to get these ideas:
1) Eat a complete breakfast — If you’re trying to avoid sugar cravings throughout your day, breakfast is one of the most important places to start. Those who begin the day with a complete breakfast of high-fiber carbohydrates (like oats, 100% whole grain bread, and fruit) and high-quality protein (like lean meat, eggs, dairy foods) start the day with stable blood sugar. Typically people that eat more in the morning crave less at night and do a better job controlling their portion sizes.
2) Snack on a high-fiber carb and protein — When you feel that mid-morning or late-afternoon hunger, reaching for a filling snack instead of something high in sugar will actually be more effective. Fiber and protein in particular slow down digestion, helping you get full faster and stay full longer, so consider string cheese and fruit, yogurt and berries, beef jerky and a granola bar. (Adding some sparkling water to go along with it can help you feel fuller too.)
3) Don’t let yourself get too hungry — People often think that by skipping out on a snack or meal they’re being “healthier,” but this will almost always just lead to more intense cravings. That’s because when people get too hungry, they typically don’t look for something healthy to eat. Instead, they look for something sweet to raise their blood sugar back up to normal. A blood sugar drop is a real thing; it can make you feel fatigued, have a headache, and even experience dizziness, shakiness, and nauseousness. Eating more often and balancing that meal or snack with carbs and protein can prevent you from blood sugar drops and ultimately help you avoid those sugar cravings.
So grab some Syfo and strive to change your eating habits throughout the day and you’ll be well on your way to kicking the sugar habit. For more tips to cut down on the cravings, you can read this Eat This, Not That! article here.
