Proud to Support the Black Sheep Marines Team
Syfo is proud to support and sponsor the Black Sheep Marines Dragon Boat Racing Team, who recently won the Military Cup Gold Medal at the Walgreen’s Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival on October 20th, 2012. Later that day, they went on to win the Bronze Medal in the Community Mixed A Division Grand Final. The Walgreen’s Orlando Festival is a highly competitive international dragon boat racing event with 79 teams competing.
The Black Sheep Marines formed in January 2012 under the leadership of Marine Gordon Gillis and his wife Christine with the commitment to produce a charitable and winning team that would inspire others to always do their best and never give up, no matter their age or disability. Named after the famous Black Sheep Marine Squadron, this senior co-ed team consists mainly of Marines, Navy and other military services personnel. Based in the Villages, Florida retirement community, the team dedicates its efforts to supporting veterans’ issues and our Wounded Warriors.
Dragon boats originate from China and are part of a family of traditional paddled long boats found throughout Asia. Dragon boat racing is a paddling sport that has its roots in an ancient Chinese folk ritual between competing villages that goes back 2000 years.
